Wei Nan

Born in Beijing, China, in 1994, the artist completed a doctoral program in lacquer arts at the Graduate School of Arts, Kyoto City University of Arts. Using leather as her primary material, she explores new possibilities in lacquer art, emphasizing form, vitality, and originality. Her works emerge from the process of stretching and wrinkling leather, capturing the beautiful, spontaneous curves that arise and preserving them with lacquer to create rich, dynamic shapes. The primary colors in her work are the glossy, deep black and powerful red, which are characteristic of lacquer. By combining the softness of leather with the shine of lacquer, she imbues her works with the beauty and strength of nature, expressing the mysteries and energy of natural phenomena such as blooming flowers and the flow of water.
